Legal Professionalism

Horton, Shields & Knox, P.C. provides a wide array of legal services in the area of legal professionalism.

Members of Horton, Shields & Knox, P.C. consult with lawyers and law firms throughout the state on issues of legal ethics; represent attorneys in disciplinary proceeding; advise lawyers on matters of advertising, random audits and employee defalcations; and provide legal defense in professional negligence matters. The firm also provides legal representation regarding the application of the rules governing the unauthorized practice of law.

Members of the firm have represented attorneys in all aspects of the grievance process including the initial response to a grievance complaint filed with the grievance panel, public hearings before the Statewide Grievance Committee, and presentments to superior court. In addition, members of the firm have represented lawyers in appeals from disciplinary sanctions in the superior court and the state's appellate courts.

Firm members represent candidates for admission to the Connecticut Bar in both the application process as well as before the Bar Examining Committee. The law firm also provides legal representation to lawyers on readmission to the practice of law in the superior and appellate courts.  

Both Attorney Horton and Attorney Knox have testified as expert witnesses on ethical matters. 
 
In addition, members of the firm represent lawyers on ethics consultations related to the everyday practice of law.  The issues commonly addressed include conflicts of interest, law firm dissolution, moving between law firms, and legal advertising to name a few.  The consultations may require limited advice or a long term relationship. Both are welcome: it is better to ask first, rather than regret later. 

Members of Horton, Shields & Knox have been involved in the ethics field for over 30 years.  Attorney Wesley Horton was Chair of the CBA Committee on Professional Ethics and has been a member since 1976. Attorney Kimberly Knox has been on the Committee on Professional Ethics since 1989 and is a former Chair of the CBA Litigation Section.  Attorney Knox annotates the Rules of Professional Conduct in the Connecticut Practice Book Annotated.  Attorney Karen Dowd, a former Chair of the CBA Litigation Section, serves on the CBA Professional Discipline Committee.  Attorney Brendon Levesque chairs the Rules Committee of the CBA Litigation Section.  Members of the firm are frequent speakers and writers on ethical issues facing the bar.
